Overview:
Lei Feng (雷锋; Léi Fēng) (December 18, 1940 - August 15, 1962) was a soldier of the People's Liberation Army of the PRC. He was characterized by propaganda as a selfless and modest figure after his death and consequently was an idol to many. Today Lei continues to serve as the idol to elementary school students who commemorate and "learn from" him in everyday life, and has become a resilient cultural icon, with many t-shirts printed with his picture on the front.
　　Born in Wangcheng, Hunan (near the Town of Leifeng, Changsha, Hunan, named in his honour), Lei joined the Communist youth corps when he was very young. Lei died in 1962 at the age of 22, when a telephone pole, struck by an army truck, killed him, when he was directing the truck in backing up. After Lei's death, Mao Zedong began what was to be known as the *"Learn from Comrade Lei Feng" (向雷锋同志学习) Campaign, designed to use Lei as a good example to the Chinese people to be cheerfully selfless and noble in thought.
　　the Chinese word 学习, when translated literally, can be "to learn, or learn" however, given this context, it means something like "to follow", therefore, the slogan/phrase 向雷锋同志学习 means more of something like "follow the examples of comrade Lei-Feng."
　　Since, March 5th has become the official "Learn from Lei Feng Day". This day involves various community and school events where people go clean up parks, schools, and other community locations. Local news on that day usually has footage from these events.
　　Lei's most recognizable image in popular culture is in t-shirt, he's in the same category as other revolutionary symbols including Mao Zedong and Che Guevera at street vendors. Some Lei Feng t-shirts have made their way into the United States as well. Hayden Christensen's character in the movie Life as a House is wearing a Lei Feng t-shirt.
　　In March 2006, China released a game titled Learn From Lei Feng Online in which the player has to do good deeds, fight spies, and collect parts of Mao Zedong's collection. If the player wins, he or she gets to meet Chairman Mao in the game.
　　Cultural Importance
　　Communist China's leaders have praised Lei Feng as the personification of altruism, the truly selfless figure. Although the historicity and authenticity of the man's story is under dispute, his cultural importance is ingrained within everyday life in China. The importance of moral character was emphasized heavily during Mao's era, but Deng-era reforms have seen a moral erosion where competitiveness in social networks has paved its path. Lei Feng's prominence from school textbooks have declined since the 1970's, although he remains part of the national curriculum and many of his deeds are taught in the elementary school curriculum. The term huo Lei Feng (literally Lei Feng alive) has become a noun (or adjective) for anyone that is seen as selfless, or anyone that goes out of their way to help others.

　　从一九六一年开始，雷锋经常应邀去外地作报告，他出差机会多了，为人民服务的机会就多了，人们流传着这样一句话：“雷锋出差一千里，好事做了一火车”。

　　一次雷锋外出在沈阳车站换车的时候，一出检票口，发现一群人围看一个背着小孩的中年妇女，原来这位妇女从山东去吉林看丈夫，车票和钱丢了。雷锋用自己的津贴费买了一张去吉林的火车票塞到大嫂手里，大嫂含着眼泪说：“大兄弟，你叫什么名字，是哪个单位的？”雷锋说：“我叫解放军，就住在中国。” （雷锋式幽默，汗一个... ...很是奇怪，如果雷锋没说名字，大嫂就不应该知道他是谁，那么这个事情是如何传出来的？难道是雷锋回到部队自己广播的？自己在《雷锋日记》里写的？自己写的嘛.....谁能担保有真伪）

　　五月的一天，雷锋冒雨要去沈阳，他为了赶早车，早晨5点多就起来（路上人应该很少吧），带了几个馒头就披上雨衣上路了，路上，看见一位妇女背着一个小孩，手还领着一个小女孩也正艰难地向车站走去。雷锋脱下身上的雨衣披在大嫂身上，又抱起小女孩陪他们一起来到车站，上车后，雷锋见小女孩冷得发颤，又把自己的贴身线衣脱下来给她穿上，雷锋估计她早上也没吃饭（雷锋心里想的事情作者也知道？），就把自己带的馒头给她们吃。火车到了沈阳，天还在下雨，雷锋又一直把她们送到家里。那位妇女感激地说：“同志，我可怎么感谢你呀！”（这个事情是如何传出来的？）

一天傍晚，天下起大雨，雷锋见公路上一位妇女怀里抱着小孩，手里还拉着小孩，身上还背着包袱，在哗哗的大雨中一步一滑地走着，雷锋忙上前一打听，才知道这位大嫂从外地探亲归来，要去十几里外的樟子沟去，她着急地说：“同志啊，今天雨都把我浇迷糊了，这还有孩子，我哭也哭不到家啊！”

雷锋把雨衣披在大嫂身上，抱起那个大一点的孩子冒雨朝樟子沟走去，宁可自己淋得透湿，一直走了两个多小时，才把她们母子送到家。（同样的问题）

昨天去看了闺蜜,实在被刺激不行了.她现在的人生实在太完美,而我太不顺,所以披着马甲,要来八一八闺蜜和我的成长,虽说是闺蜜,但是现在联系也很少了,不过小时候还是闺蜜的.她并不是JP,只是想讨论最后得到幸福到底是什么样的女人.　　我们一个院子出生长大的,我比她大个半岁,人生岁月可以说是重叠,当时我们那里机关大院和某个学校大院是在一起的,所以我是属于机关的小孩,她是学院的小孩,她父亲学术还是很牛的,我们地方的社科院院长,学术带头人,对他父亲最大的印象就是和蔼,喜欢看书,我父亲走仕途方面,也算不错,她母亲和我母亲一样职业,当时也在一个单位,所以两家关系还是很亲的,现在来看家庭环境基本也差不多.两个小孩年纪差不多,又一起上学,一个班,成绩也差不多,不过她属于长得一般的小孩,所以一直以来我都比较受老师喜欢,大家都知道小孩长得好看比较讨喜,所以通常什么事情,我做了同样事情老师都会称称赞我,我承认我是比较虚荣的,长得好看小孩也容易很多小孩跟我玩,她都是默默跟在身后那种,有时候我耍点小脾气,她还要默默讨好我的.两家父母都管教很严,小时候记得事情不多了,因为后来机关大院落成我就搬家,我们也就不常在一起了,只记得她两件事,学校号召给灾区捐款,他父母大概是给了一块钱,那时候一块钱很多了,她偷拿家里的钱十块还是二十块去捐,被她母亲打的像斑马,因为这件事,还被院子里小孩孤立很久,因为我们那个正统大院,大家都被家长教育不要跟偷钱小孩玩,现在看来真不是什么大事,不过事件发生之后,她每天都默默跟在我们后面希望我们跟她玩;另外就是她加邻居也是机关系统的,邻居小孩比她大一岁小男孩,他们也是一起玩的,她父亲和那个男孩的父亲也是完全死党,同乡同学还邻居,都是默默把对方当作亲家看的,两家母亲都是说娃娃亲,反正印象中她不是跟着我后面就是跟着那个男孩子后面的.跟小媳妇一样帮那个男孩子拿书包什么的.小时候印象就是她是个听话跟班孩子,因为三年级还是四年级我就搬家了,搬家之后我还是在新的小学新的环境做抢眼那个,我的小学生涯就是讨人喜欢,抢眼的小孩,据说我搬家之后她就成为他们学院那派小孩的头头了.不过我们不在一个学校了,所以不知道了.　　接着就是初中了,因为都读了本地最好的中学,所以有同校了,但是不在一个班级了,但是我常常邀请她到我们家玩,她也很羡慕我家,寒暑假什么都要是交替到对方家住一段时间,我们关系还是很亲,但是我心里其实不太看得起她,因为我父亲当时已经站在比较高的位置上了,这个圈子连小孩都早熟,所以别人都很奉承我,她还是很老实,最多羡慕下我有新的漫画看,有新的日剧碟看,其他并不太讨好我,她父亲还在默默读书,有时候听到大家提到他父亲,都说是书呆子,口气也是不屑的,她到我家玩,我父母也都很普通招待她的,我也就跟着随自己心情跟她玩了,原谅我们都有幼稚的时候,我在的班级被誉为历届美女最多的班级,美女多自然打扮什么的都突出了,她长相还是很一般的,打扮也很普通,家里经济条件可能也一般,所以我小小虚荣心,虽然私交很好,但是我在学校是不太跟她玩的,而且我住校她走读,所以在学校交集更少,私底下我还是很喜欢她的,因为她衬托下,我就很优秀啊,原谅我的幼稚.我都可以高高在上地看她,姐妹们不是我不厚道,大家再次原谅我的幼稚,这样的心态还一直跟随着我,我一直潜意识觉得她比我差远了,所以今天才越发觉得非常嫉妒和失衡.不过不管我什么心态,我们还是无话不说的好闺蜜的.她其实很多才多艺,只是在一个大市里的重点中学,多少人精啊,她被默默压抑了她的各种才艺,所以初中她继续是丑小鸭.不过她的胆子是很大的,不太在意世俗的看法,那时候就体现了,当时初中有个教导主任,非常严厉,大家都很恨他,他规定不允许我们穿高于膝盖的裙子,可是这个闺蜜的妈妈给她买了一身新衣服,裙子类似网球裙样式,比较短,里面有短裤,但是我觉得也只能算是衬裤类型,她华丽丽就穿去学校了,门口被教导主任抓住,就说要她回去换,她非常雷地掀起裙子对教导主任说这是裤子,据说大家都目瞪口呆^^^^^

二部分
接下来就是她的高中了,我高中依然留在初中这所学校,她中考失利,大概是差了一两分,当时学校政策本校学生差八分都可以交钱去上,她却选择了去县里的一所重点高中,当时那所还不是省重点,只能算是市重点,据说她非常一向和蔼的父亲把她骂得要死,要她继续读离家近的省重点,她怎么都不肯,说不然就不读了,所以她就去县里读高中了,我问她为什么不继续在家读书,她很强地回答了我:宁为鸡首不为牛后.她的高中生活可以说是传奇了,你想想,一个市里去的,多才多艺的,家里条件不错的,(她家在我们初中那个学校不算什么,但是在县中还是很好的,而且高中之后他父亲的学术生涯很顺利,她的干爹也就是前面提到的娃娃亲邻居也是给了她父亲很多提携),她长得一般,可是气质什么还是很好的,家里书多,读书自然也多,写文章什么也是厉害的.所以她在县中的生活简直是顺风顺水.接着华丽的早恋了,男友据说也是市里某局局长不成材的儿子去的县中读书,见过,长得帅,直到大学我和她一个学校,她男友来看她,整层楼都到窗口看的,就是一贯学校流行的,篮球校队队长,阳光型帅哥,我问过闺蜜喜欢他什么,她很简短回答我:"帅!"她自己是特长生,所以不用太在意成绩,但是完全是拖垮了那个男生的成绩,那个男生完全是把她往手心里捧啊,也不读书了,据线报,当时学校老师都默许他们一对啊,说是那个男生出去打比赛,她就不上课跟去,在场边递递水,毛巾什么的.更强的是,因为那个男的比她大一届,那个男的被送去读大学之后,闺蜜非常雷人的私奔跟他去了,一个月没回去上课,最后被爸妈拎回来了,自然是好好教育的.我父母都在家里说这个丫头毁了,她的干爹干妈据说也很生气,两家关系都紧张一阵的,补充说明下,她的干爹这时候已经是我们地方的一把手了,所以干爹很生气,整个机关都知道了.当时大家都抱着看热闹的心情观望中,不过其实她干爹的儿子也是本市有名的花花公子了,高中已经弄大了同学的肚子,也是华丽雷人的小太子党,读书也很烂.我还问过我闺蜜以后家里要是要她要嫁给这个男的,她还很郁闷的,我们还一起很言情小说的叹息了几把.不过她还是华丽的继续和帅哥男友一起,父母在学校安插眼线,毕竟是高中最后一年了,期间经历了男友过来看她,被学校迅速通知她爸,然后父亲招来公安局的朋友狠狠打了那个男的^^^^^^^^等等系列琼瑶剧情,还是没能撼动他们深刻的感情.但是强人闺蜜就读了那一年书,一个文艺生,考的成绩却只差重本几分,专业成绩也很好.所以按常理她要去北京读书了.我得知她要去北京读书之后很是失落一阵,因为自己高考成绩不好,只好出钱去了本省一个大学.但是那个时候我也默默在喜欢一个男的,所以不太关注闺蜜了.正在举家欢庆的时候,她的干爹干妈甚至都要张罗给她和自己儿子定亲的时候,闺蜜同男友难分难舍时候,因为闺蜜男友也是读本省大学,闺蜜华丽丽的出了意外事故,文艺生是做不成,因为嗓子坏了,身上也有伤痕了.在家养好伤之后闺蜜也出钱买进我一样的大学了.期间我常常去医院看望闺蜜,所以还是赞美她男友真是帅哥中的好男人,每天去看闺蜜,每天都闺蜜爸赶出来,还是每天去的.闺蜜当时几乎毁容的,也不能说话.每天几乎昏迷,他都还是每天去.我的高中乏善可陈,读书,默默喜欢隔壁班的风云人物,因为长相不错,很多男孩追,前面提到的闺蜜娃娃亲太子党也是很追过我一段时间的,不过我沉迷在自己的世界,再加上一股子认为自己大小姐的优越感,觉得一般男人配不上我,对闺蜜帅气男友也是很鄙视的,觉得闺蜜非常肤浅,自己很深沉,周围的朋友都是市里有钱人家或是有势人家的女孩子,大家讨论最多的是出国啦,以后要去大城市读大学啦等等话题.上学日子读书,不上学日子也是读各种补习,跟另一个一个玩的最好的朋友一起学英语,因为她要出国.跟闺蜜相处的日子越来越少,每次匆匆见面,都是逛逛说说话,她赶着见男友,我赶着见那个闺蜜,因为那个闺蜜很让我羡慕,会玩会读书有想法.

接下来就是大学了,我的大学几乎是每个一般重点大学的大学生写照,外语系,被捧成系花,被很多人追,也改变在父母面前的性格,变得很自立,觉得自己很有想法,专注些很才女的路线的书,写些自己觉得很有深度和想法的文章,连看个言情小说也要读张小娴亦舒,才与众不同,觉得自己不仅仅是美女更加是才女,家里经济条件也不错,并不是父亲是贪官什么的,如果是贪官,也早就送出国了,而是母亲单位效益非常好,所以更加自视甚高,被高中暗恋的远在北京读书的隔壁班才子追,终于恋爱,初恋,女孩子总是很投入,再加上对象又是本人自以为唯一能配的上我的那个,所以每天不是在等电话,就是在打电话,再读点书,再无病呻吟下,再就是自己也有点势利了,觉的不如自己都不好做什么朋友,保持联系的都是高中那几个出了国的同学,觉得她们才是厉害的,接着按部就班考各种证书,考研,基本是符合HX社会的HX人才,但是今天我开始否定我的人生.而大一的闺蜜几乎封锁了自己,完全没有读书,也不跟人交往,我跟她一个学校,宿舍一层楼,我见到她的机会也是很少,因为自己也在谈恋爱,所以没有好好关心她,但是可想见她心理有多难过,偶尔我想联络她,打电话到寝室她肯定不在,通常都去了另外一个市的男朋友那里,那时候还不流行手机,所以我也没有太关心她了,所以我们也就越来越远.大一岁月只记得她帅气的男友时常被拿来大家讨论,她诡异的性格也常常被人讨论,因为这个时候她家里已经条件很不错了,前面说过她母亲和我母亲一个单位,她父亲学术讲课什么的越来越多被认可,到处讲课挣钱也多,又因为意外事故的关系,她家里对她非常大方,想物质上弥补她,她吃穿用度是很豪气的,她爸,她干爹几乎都是有机会来就来看她的,这里要说她干爹干妈对她虽然还是非常好的,不过也可以看出人的自私性,以前口口声声到处说我家儿子儿媳妇,把闺蜜列为他家媳妇的,闺蜜出事故之后都是说我儿子我干女儿怎么怎么了,都是一个院子出来的,我们机关里的人都冷笑看他们变这个脸的,不过我们冷笑也没用,她的干爹已经从地方一把手到了省里的一把手.所以闺蜜人生开始了一个诡异的新阶段.前面提到闺蜜绝对是一个聪明孩子,但是聪明也要勤奋,所以闺蜜不读书,成绩都挂了,而且也华丽不去补考,就让它挂,直到闺蜜大三结束了她的初恋,我如何发现她结束恋情,都是听别人八卦了,因为帅气男友再也没有出现了,闺蜜也每天都去上课了,所以猜想他们分手了,然后我再去跟闺蜜证实了.闺蜜在她们院里评价并不好,同班同学也不喜欢她,应该是她从来没有给别人了解的机会,这个时期我和她接触才算多一点,但是我已经发现闺蜜不是我印象中的闺蜜了,她的想法什么的,我都不能理解了,我的想法还是女学生的,我觉得闺蜜很有心机了,做事也深藏不露了.所以开始不太愿意跟她玩了.分手之后的闺蜜修养了一年情伤,大四下学期开始相亲生涯,我跟她聊天,她说她的理想就是毕业就结婚,我心理很鄙视了一番,因为我考上了研,甚至觉得她不配做我的朋友了.雷人的闺蜜最终没有去补考完,所以她连毕业证都没拿,我就这件事情问她,她说:我的人生不需要那些东西了.我当时想法真是觉得她很可笑,自己读不出来书,考都来不及,才说自己不需要这些东西,看你以后怎么找工作.这件事父辈那边没什么人知道,毕竟不是什么光彩事,我也没传过.闺蜜在父母和干爹干妈网罗的相亲对象中,迅速挑中一个男人嫁了,实现毕业就结婚理想.家里陪嫁了一部别克车,当时周围大人都觉得她嫁得莫名其妙,也都觉得她一定是下嫁了,虽然她干爹干妈对她还是没话说的,她家条件也很不错,但是她毕竟没学历,身上又有很多出事故留的疤痕,可能是找个潜力股给她,现在委屈下也没什么,以后男的发达了也就好了.结婚都没在家里摆酒席,圈子里的大人都是不看好的,觉得如果男方家里有一点半点可以炫耀,肯定会大搞特搞得.

结完婚,闺蜜和她老公就去她老公工作的地方了,然后自己找了工作,很强的没有文凭的闺蜜找了工作,而且是雷人的让人遐想的总经理秘书,当时我还看不起的,不过自己工作之后,发现一个小公司的总经理秘书相当于半个副总啊,基本不是一般毕业生可以做的,闺蜜也绝对不是潜规则什么的,因为她的长相真的不是出色的,家教关系,行事也很端正,而且我读书时候还拜托闺蜜给我介绍去她工作过的公司实习,闺蜜只干了几个月,但是所有接触过她的员工对她评价是很高的,老板也因为她介绍我去对我很好,因为相信她的推荐.我也默默到广东读研了,继续和才子恋爱,才子在家准备出国,我也积极想要尾随,人生积极展开中,基本没有联系闺蜜,过了大半年之后,听闻闺蜜出国了,因为老公外派去英国工作,我心理那个雷啊,闺蜜是个四级都没过的,居然去了英国,接下来更雷的事情发生了,闺蜜嫁得原来是豪门,闺蜜去了英国之后,时不时听到,闺蜜的某某亲戚又去她老公家族企业工作了,现在多么发达了,闺蜜的父母亲时不时去国外度假了,闺蜜的干哥哥和闺蜜老公家家族企业一起开发楼盘了,消息一个比一个震撼,不过闺蜜爸妈之前就一向低调,闺蜜更加是,我跟她电邮联系,她也没有说过半句她老公家里情况,我问急了,她也就说没想过老公家里怎么样,结婚前老公也没说过,自己觉得挺意外的,也没什么钱,但是闺蜜高调的亲戚四处宣传中得知闺蜜老公家经营着很大的公司,年利润过亿,我和父母都觉得不排除浮夸成分.去年闺蜜回国了,十二月我们见了一次,闺蜜并没有刻意打扮,穿衣服什么的都是以前旧的,跟我逛广州也盯着打折的东西,聊天中也没说什么,我甚至都觉得是误传,但是可以感觉闺蜜的气质是压倒我的漂亮了,我自己出门就吸引些年轻学生,文艺腔调的,可是我跟闺蜜去吃西餐,居然有一看就是精英的男人过来搭讪闺蜜,我当时心里觉得出国过得还是不同,眼界气质都变了,当时应该出国的.直到我昨天去她家玩,因为过年没回去,她母亲去滑雪摔伤胳膊了,我母亲同她母亲关系挺好,就要我去看看,我去看了,深深被雷了,高档别墅小区,她公公连着买了四套,闺蜜姑夫为她公公公司工作,也买了同小区的别墅,都在一块,闺蜜妈妈住在她姑夫家,谈话中闺蜜的家婆在外买了东西送过来给闺蜜妈妈,真是珠光宝气的,一身行头估计最少都是我父母亲工资相加一年份,说话也是轻声细语的.闺蜜在家穿着也是贵气的很,虽然很简单,一看样式剪裁都肯定不便宜,感觉都不在一个地方,她是浮着的.其实有钱的我见得也多了,但是贵气的真的很少,我闺蜜坐在那里,我感觉就是我以为的贵族太太样子了.当时结婚家里陪嫁的别克车现在是家里阿姨出去买菜开.我说闺蜜,太吓人了.闺蜜还很不好意思,说自己也没有什么贵太太命,出门还是打车呢,连车都不会开.我心里一方面觉得她真是太会假了.另一方面觉得她也是有一定高度看我才会这么谦虚,因为我是觉得没有不喜欢攀比的女人.但是事实我被雷到了,真是雷啊.她老公也是很宠他的样子,过来坐了一会就回去家里陪拜年的客人了,但是过来那一下,就觉得看她的眼神都是宠溺的,让人发麻的,闺蜜说什么她老公都是笑眯眯的,长得也高高帅帅,还说要我们常常来玩,说闺蜜都不带朋友过来玩,还很认真跟我老公聊了下天,因为一个行业,他家经销,我老公他们家是厂商,所以我老公也很高兴,因为行业经销商翘楚啊,以后可以关照的多了.回家之后,我心理百感交集,真是嫉妒的,因为从来没有觉得闺蜜可以过得这么好,甚至心里都没想过她是我对手的,可是她怎么会这么好呢?那方面我都是比她强的.想想我自己,读研期间,想要跟初恋出国,但是又找不好学校,父母又不希望我走太远,最后异地一年之后分手,才子总是很多人觊觎的,我自己也突然对自己没有自信,老是烦他,最后只好分手,分手之后我又堕落了大半年,怨天怨地,也怨我父母不让我出去,最后在一堆追的人中间选了这个老公,年纪比我大了八岁,样子就是广东人本地人长相,个子也不高,我都一米六八,他跟我差不多高,跟才子差距大不说,跟学校追我的男的差距也大,但是我父母觉得他很不错了,脾气好,对我好,家里生意也不错,我就嫁了,老公对我也确实是好,但是闺蜜老公也是一看就很会疼人的.自己读完研留在学校教书,我的以前那些出国的姐妹基本都回来了,还都羡慕我的,说我嫁入豪门了,同事也都说我嫁的好,可是我这个豪门比起闺蜜的,简直是天差地远的.也许真的我太小气,太善妒了,但是真的今天一天气都不顺,我家婆也是典型广东女人,觉得我不会照顾她儿子,每天都挑剔我,虽然面上对我是好的,实际上不喜欢我.可是闺蜜的家婆,一看就是知书达理,说话也是细声细气,而且信佛,所以脾气一定很好.一起床就听见楼下厅里都是麻将声音,烦死了,我父母要过来过年,家婆还很多废话,也不想我父母就我一个女儿过年不孤单吗?难道不能过来过年吗?也不能对老公发这些脾气,毕竟他还是没错的,只好自己闷闷的.现在楼下还是麻将声.我在这里打字也没人问我一句半句的.真气人.

Competition in China's auto market is gradually heating up

At 23, Shi Lingxi bought his first car last week.
He considered a Ford Focus and other models during months of shopping. But on Wednesday, Shi negotiated a 35,000-yuan discount that knocked about $5,000 off the price of a Nissan Blubird. He put the $20,000 sedan on a credit card his parents will help pay.
He doesn't plan to drive it to work much -- it's too hard to find a parking spot -- but he looks forward to the freedom his car represents: the ability to get out of the Chinese capital for weekend outings.
"I bought the car to expand the radius of my living," said Shi, a human resources professional in Beijing.
There are millions like him in China. Personal car ownership is driving the million-vehicle-per-year growth in China's auto industry and, for now, seven of eight are bought by first-time car buyers.
Economic growth and the corresponding boom in the auto industry in this nation of 1.3 billion people -- and in the private passenger car market in particular -- has attracted more than 100 global and domestic vehicle manufacturers to compete on the Chinese stage.
Nearly all of them -- including General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler LLC -- plan to display their offerings, unveil new concepts and vie for consumers at Auto China 2008, between April 20 and 28.
"This is now the largest auto show in the world, by number of automakers," said Nick Reilly, president of GM Asia Pacific. "Where just two years ago Beijing was a relatively small, cramped show, now, you're getting first-time showings. Unless it's a major international show, you just don't waste those. That's really a sign it's become a very important show."
Growing and growing
China's growth is in stark contrast with what is happening in North America, which in 2007 experienced its worst sales in 15 years and where US automakers reported historic losses. In the last 10 years, China's auto market has grown 500 percent.
"The dynamic we're going to experience is different than anything we've experienced in any of our lifetimes," said Jim Raymond, executive director of vehicle sales, service and marketing for GM's Asia-Pacific region, which includes China.
And experts at the Automotive News China Conference in Beijing late last week forecast continuing annual increases of about 10 percent in the China market for decades to come.
"There has been a big shift in the world economy, powered by the populations and changed political direction in China, India and Russia and other locations geographically close to these three," Reilly of GM said. "This is a shift in economic power that has decades or more to run."
It's estimated that there are between 43 million and 47 million vehicles on the road in China -- about as many as there were on US roads in 1947.
The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute reports that only about 33 of every 1,000 Chinese residents owns an automobile.
IBM Business Consulting puts that the number at 44 vehicles per 1,000, Frank O'Brien, executive vice president of Magna International Inc's Asia Pacific Region said.
That compares with a world average of about 120 automobiles for every 1,000, O'Brien said, and ownership rates above 800 for every 1,000 people in America.
He expects vehicle ownership to grow to 100 per every 1,000 people by 2015. Estimates for 2030 range from 178 to 269 per 1,000 people.
"More and more, people will join the automobile market as they migrate from two wheels," GM's Reilly said.

China Automotive|Car Market 2010 forcast

Private equity practioners will discover that brand management and customer retention, not production strategies, will decide who wins the battle for the Chinese automotive market. These are the principal findings of the latest study from Mercer Management Consulting, which concludes that only producers with strong and distinctive brands will survive the impending consolidation of the industry.Ultimately, the battle for China will be won in the minds of consumers. That is why auto manufacturers should focus their China strategies on building up a solid brand image based on a tailored model policy and bolstered with improvements and expansions in the sales and service networks. These networks lend local support to the brand image and redeem the brand's claim at point-of-sale by projecting the dealer's image and safeguarding the quality of service. In China, too, customer satisfaction, customer retention, and brand loyalty will be critical for success on the market. The Chinese market is one of a kind, and not only in its high growth rate. More than fifty brands are vying for the buyers' attention. In recent years Japanese, Korean, American, European, and domestic OEMs have built up sizable surplus capacity. Nearly six million cars may be turned out every year, while sales figures for 2004 will probably amount to 2.3 million. Not until 2009 will the Chinese market grow to reach or exceed the six million mark. By then, manufacturers will probably have expanded their capacities to almost eight million cars per year – and that's not even counting imports. Prices dropped 9 percent last year, despite a huge 50-percent growth in unit sales, and unsold stock ballooned to 200,000 cars. Thanks to political steps to cool the market – and hesitation on the part of buyers, who are disconcerted by the plunge in prices – this year's growth will probably reach a "mere" 15 percent, which is less than manufacturers had hoped for. Mercer's extensive study "Chinese Automotive Market 2010" paints a realistic picture of further developments in this market. Interviews with experts, a consumer poll, and secondary research supply the requisite data for large-scale industry-wide scenarios. "Our study explodes a few myths about the Chinese automotive market that have been around for years," claims Dr. August Joas, the Mercer Director in charge of the study. "One of them is China's purported 1.3 billion potential buyers. Another is the belief that Chinese customers primarily look for cheap means of transportation." Mainstream cars are the number-one growth market The Mercer study reveals that the need for low-price cars in particular has been vastly overrated. Although the segment will grow at a healthy rate of 14 percent over the next few years, the manufacturing capacity already in place – nearly 3.5 million cars – will still far outstrip demand in 2010. This miscalculation applies in particular to cheap domestic brands: the three leading domestic producers - Changan, Changhe, and Hafei – are positioned very low on the price scale and will also find it hard to satisfy the government's impending environmental strictures. Others, such as Juanhuai, Red Flag, and Zonghua, do not have sufficient volume of production to survive in the long run. These brands will either bite the dust or be forced to enter cooperative ventures. The best-positioned companies are volume manufacturers of mainstream cars. Here, too, the current annual production capacity of 2 million exceeds demand by a factor of 2. But Mercer forecasts that even when production expands to 3 million in 2009, it will no longer be sufficient to meet demand. Mainstream cars are the segment with the highest growth rate on the Chinese market: the current market share of 53 percent will rise to 63 percent by 2010 – an annual growth rate of 21 percent. Yet the mainstream segment will also witness the fiercest competition. Eight foreign and four domestic manufacturers already have good starting positions to jump to the front of the mainstream pack: Buick, Citroën, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen, as well as Chery, Suzuki, Wuling, and Xiali. Many other brands will try to capitalize on the growth in the mainstream segment. The premium segment, currently growing at 13 percent, has largely been parceled out. According to the Mercer study, Audi in particular has a head start in local production among premium mass producers, followed by even higher-positioned imports from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. To date, Lexus and Volvo lag well behind these three "brand champions." Enhancing productivity is a major homework assignment China is currently the most profitable market in the world for auto manufacturers. This is mainly due to its high price levels: despite the current drop in prices, Chinese prices for new cars are still 10 to 15 percent higher than the international norm. But the ongoing battle for market shares is causing prices to plunge further, and by 2005 they may already have reached German levels. This is bad news for OEMs, for it is not only retail prices that are high in China. Production, too, is 10 to 20 percent more expensive than at other locations. In the case of low-volume models, the difference in costs can even amount to 40 percent. The main reasons for these high production costs are substandard plants, high costs for raw materials and subcontracted parts and components, and low job productivity. Further problems arise from cumbersome joint ventures, low quality in locally supplied parts and components, and a nonexistent infrastructure of specialist equipment suppliers and service providers for this demanding high-tech industry. Other problems that beset the Chinese automotive industry are lack of protection for intellectual property and widespread industrial espionage. Chinese authorities do not recognize international patents or trademarks. Imitation is not considered intellectual piracy. The consequences are dire: Toyota lost a lawsuit against the Chinese manufacturer Geely for copying the Toyota brand logo. Honda and GM are conducting similar battles against such domestic producers as Chery regarding trademark violations and product imitation. More than half of the entire spare-parts market belongs to gray and counterfeit parts. OEMs reach a 20-percent market share at best – a fact that makes the current decline in new car prices to world market levels particularly painful. "All manufacturers are currently working at full throttle to get these quintessentially Chinese problems under wraps," says Joas. "But our study reveals that this is only a necessary homework assignment. The market shares of the future will be won in the minds of consumers. This means that the only way to achieve a sufficient brand image, and thus long-term customer retention, is through the magnetism of precisely positioned brands." Brand awareness is still low The Mercer study shows that foreign brands, thanks to their image, have a head start in the competition for buyers, despite government support for domestic brands. Foreign brands also have a clear lead in customer satisfaction. But given the confusing and rapidly expanding range of products on the market, brand awareness and brand loyalty are naturally still low: only 25 percent of the customers choose the same brand when they buy their next car, compared to almost 80 percent in western industrial countries. Long-term brand images and positions will only emerge over the next few years. "This is where manufacturers have to buckle down," Joas continues. "The brand is the only way to escape direct competition. Image is the best sales pitch, even in China." Still, the study points out that 46 percent of mainstream buyers, and 34 percent in the case of premium cars, would again buy a car of the same brand. Image weakness and lack of differentiation are especially noticeable in the low-price segment: only 7 percent of current car owners maintained that they would buy a car of the same brand. The Chinese customer: poised to become king Mercer's "Chinese Automotive Market 2010" study reveals vast changes in the minds of Chinese consumers. Currently 80 percent of all car owners indicate that they bought their last car primarily for business reasons. Yet 70 percent will buy their next car for its greater convenience and status. Business reasons, once so important, lie where convenience used to be: at 10 percent. Nevertheless, the prototypical Chinese customer for automobiles is a first-time buyer – and the car is usually the largest investment he's ever made. The need for advice and information is correspondingly high. Given fifty competing brands, many of which have only been on the market for one or two years, the customers' brand awareness is extremely low. The Mercer study shows that Chinese car buyers are especially concerned about maintaining the value of their large investment. Yet the current drop in prices kindles a strong feeling of uncertainty among buyers regarding the lasting value of their purchase and leads to restrained purchasing behavior rather than a rise in unit sales. Safety, reliability, low maintenance costs: all three are high on the wish-lists of car buyers and are much more important to customers than list prices or rebates. The Mercer study reveals that Chinese buyers are willing to skip so-called "starter models" and aim directly at the mainstream bracket. 29 percent maintain that they want to buy a premium model in the future, and 55 percent tend toward the mainstream category, which will therefore become the number-one growth segment in the Chinese automotive market. "In many sectors China works like a mature market," Joas explains. "From the very beginning, people who can afford a car usually want more than just a means of transportation. Status, comfort, and safety are already major customer preferences today." Brands in the joint venture jungle With its myriad joint ventures, the complex structure of the Chinese automotive industry considerably lowers brand visibility as well as the feasibility of brand strategies. VW is working concurrently with two partners: FAW and SAIC. Thus, the market has an FAW-VW and an SAIC-VW – not to mention a VW import. Additional confusion arises from the fact that both VW partners also have their own purely Chinese brands and operate joint ventures with other foreign manufacturers – FW with Mazda and also Toyota (via a subsidiary), SAIC in two joint ventures with General Motors. "To implement a clear brand strategy," Joas explains, "the key factor initially is a rigorous product policy emphasizing the core values of the brand. The current mare's-nest of brands and models is counterproductive: the number of brands skyrocketed to over fifty in a matter of years, and the number of locally produced models jumped from less than ten to more than sixty. There will have to be consolidation over the next few years: fewer overlaps and more clearly positioned brands give consumers greater confidence and security." The Mercer study sees especially good opportunities for producers firmly positioned in the mainstream segment, which promises the greatest growth both proportionately and in absolute terms. Pure imports will decline significantly due to regulatory restrictions. This will have an especially strong impact on the premium segment, which has depended almost exclusively on imports. Local Chinese suppliers have opportunities most of all in the low-price segment since the international magnetism and development expertise of the world's leading brands will win out in the higher brackets of the market. Car sales will take place in growth regions To date, China has only had 1.2 cars per 100 inhabitants. The corresponding figure for western industrial countries is over fifty. The growth anticipated in the automotive industry by all observers will result from the sharp rise in per capita income in the booming Chinese economy: if a mere 3.7 percent of all Chinese earned enough money to buy a car in 2002, the figure will reach 13 percent in 2010. In absolute terms, this implies a growth of today's 50 million potential buyers to more than 170 million. This stratum of the upwardly mobile is expected to lead to an increase in new car sales in China to 7 million vehicles by 2010, making China the second largest market for automobiles in the world and almost half as large as the US market. Yet new customers will not be found everywhere in China, for the Chinese economy is not booming at the same pace throughout the country. The coastal regions already have incomes far above the national average and are ripe for auto sales. "63 percent of the total gross domestic product is earned in the provinces of Guangzhou, Beijing, and Shanghai," says Joas. "These developing regions will also witness the bulk of auto growth in the coming years. That's why it is crucial for manufacturers to set up a comprehensive sales and service network right here." To date, car owners have been concentrated in metropolises such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. In the future, more cars will be bought in China's many other major cities, which will spearhead further growth. The Mercer study reckons with an average increase in car sales over the next few years amounting to 13 percent in the metropolises, but 17 and 25 percent in the second- and third-tier major cities. Sales and service underdeveloped The current predicament in sales and service is highly unsatisfactory for OEMs: there are not enough dealers and workshops, and most of those that exist lack sufficient skills. On average, a Chinese car dealer buys only 70 vehicles per year, and repair standards are extremely low. Given this situation, it is no wonder that lackluster consultation and customer care by dealers, and poor service at workshops are the main criticisms of Chinese customers. Another frequent cause for complaint are the long paths to the workshop, which amount to more than half an hour for some 40 percent of all customers. By 2010, according to the Mercer study, licensed dealers - mostly large outlets handling one or more brands – will grab roughly half of the workshop business and 70 percent of new car sales to end customers. Moreover, especially in rural areas, there will also be small traditional shops that handle some 15 percent of new car sales and 20 percent of repairs. Workshop revenue missing in the large dealers will mainly be captured by "fast fit" chains, which will conquer roughly a quarter of the service sector by 2010. Here international chains are already highly active, especially Japanese chains such as Yello Hat and AUTOBACS, though European suppliers such as Bosch are also hard at work on expanding their networks in China. The currently underdeveloped used car sector is estimated to grow to 21 percent annually over the next few years. It is severely regulated at present and will probably be dominated at first by specialist used car dealers. Thanks to their close proximity to customers and their brand affinities, the impending deregulation of the used car market will provide good opportunities for licensed dealers and workshops to increase their shares of the market. It is thought that four million used cars will already be traded in China by 2010. Consequences for auto manufacturers Competition & Brand: The brand models outlined in the Mercer study foresee a clear split among segments in the automotive market. The top segment will offer solid business for premium niche brands such as Jaguar or Porsche. Mass-produced premium brands such as Audi, BMW, and Mercedes will have it even better: they can expect to achieve attractive growth rates of 13 percent on average. Their China strategies should focus on sterling quality and image projection, techniques that have already proved their worth in the classical industrial countries. The mainstream segment is the actual "sweet spot" of the Chinese car market. Due to the large number of players, however, market shares will be hotly contested. There is no telling who will win out. The crucial question for the future will be whether Chinese customers will remain open to foreign brands or will tend to choose national Chinese brands and manufacturers, as happens, say, in Korea and Japan. To prevent such an outcome, foreign manufacturers in the mainstream sector must continue to expand their already strong position. The high percentage of first-time buyers lends great importance to marketing strategy and the design of the "first impression." Complex and confusing brand images must be streamlined so that products and messages are congruent. Unlike premium brands, which can afford to support their positioning with lavish image campaigns and exclusive dealer networks, image in the mainstream and low-price market segments is mainly formed by the appearance of the products themselves. Up to now, most manufacturers have limited the presence of their dealers mainly to major cities. It is now time to tap the smaller cities in China's growth regions. Brand-specific dealer organization will be especially suitable for mass-produced premium brands and high-quality mainstream cars. As yet, there is no money to be made in the Chinese aftermarket. The market for spare parts is dominated by gray and illegal producers. The used car market is still underdeveloped, and auto financing is subject to strict regulation. However, the first automobile financing licenses were already granted to such suppliers as Volkswagen and BMW in 2004. As in the European and American markets, automobile financing will be crucially important for the future evolution of the Chinese market. Mercer's Joas sums up the situation: "The highly dynamic Chinese market harbors great opportunities, but we already face huge surplus capacities and a sharp drop in prices. Some of my friends are trying to buy house in my city—Shenzhen, which is possiblly the most serious housing foam is. However, so far, no official approve and no one can ascertain that China’s housing market is in danger.

Compared with western and other developed markets like U.S, China's real estate industry is less experienced and immature. Currently, there are approximately 25,000 real estate brokerage agencies employing over 200,000 agents. In addition, an estimated 20,000 property management companies employing over 2 million people exist in China. Many of the brokerage companies, however, may not possess business licenses and qualification certificates. For instance, it was reported that, of the 4,000 real estate agencies currently operating in Beijing, only about 700 have business licenses.10 In a recent inspection in Shanghai, 982 real estate brokerage firms were found guilty of operating without registration with the appropriate government agency.

During the middle and late 1990's, real estate markets in big cities were overheated. Price of prime land in Beijing has fallen from the highs experienced in the boom development period of the early 1990s. In 1999, the vacancy rate for Grade A buildings was 30% in Beijing and 38% in Shanghai. Some experts estimated that the vacant space might take two to three years to be absorbed if the recent trends in demand continue. The market now seems to be picking up the momentum when many residents are upgrading into bigger housing.

A research report by Shanghai Real Estate Economic Association for the preparation of WTO entry cited that, in comparison with companies in developed countries, China's local real estate companies have the following weaknesses: 1.Lack experiences because of short history; 2. Limited competing capability due to smaller sizes; 3.Insufficient capital and backward marketing means; 4.Lower management skills; 5.Not service-oriented in general.
To regulate the market and protect consumer's interest, the government released the revised Model Commercial/Commodity Housing Purchase/Sell Contract in September 2000. The model contract serves as a standard contract and allows potential real property buyers and sellers to understand what are involved in a real estate transaction. The government hopes it will eventually help consumers reduce the risk in home purchase.

The overall real estate market in China is dynamic and grows fast in terms of capital flow and development speed in spite of the problems. The resale housing market is almost nonexistent in China a few years ago. In 1999, the government completed its basic policy for secondary housing market and encouraged urban residents who owned their homes to sell smaller, older, and low-quality houses in exchange for bigger, newer, and high-quality ones. Some cities, e.g. Shanghai and Ma Ansan of Anhui province started to experiment the secondary market earlier than other cities in China. Since 1996, there have been 67,333 residential properties being put for sales on the market in Shanghai, accounting for about 5% of the total sold properties there in the same period. In 2000 alone, about 7.5 million square meters (80.73 million square feet) existing houses were sold in Shanghai. The total transaction amount was valued at RMB 65.6 billion (about U.S. $8 billion).11 There are over 5,000 foreign funded real estate companies, including China-foreign joint ventures (JVs) or cooperative enterprises, and over 1,000 wholly foreign-owned companies currently operating in China. Hong Kong is the top investor, accounting for over 75% of total foreign investment, followed by the United States and Taiwan.12 The following chart shows the amount of total foreign investment in the Chinese real estate market in recent years. There was a drop in investment in 1997 and 1998 that could be attributed to the Asian finance crisis and over heating of the real estate market in late 90's.
According to a survey reported in the China Construction magazine, about 59% of the urban residents in China now own their own homes. The average living space for most of urban residents who own their homes is 50-80 square meters (538-861 SF). The majority of households surveyed have 2 to 4 people. About 19.7% of respondents live in rented dwellings and 11.5% receive rental subsidies from their employers or work units. It was also reported that 21.9% of the residents surveyed indicated they would like to purchase new houses with a size of 70-150 square meters (754-1615 SF) within 5 years. Family savings were the main financing resources, which stood at about 6700 billion RMB (1 trillion U.S. dollars in 2000. However, government funding and bank loans were also among favorite options.

"The new policy would not only save me more than 4,400 yuan (644 U.S. dollars) from the tax reduction in purchasing a 90-square-meter flat in Shanghai and make it earlier to obtain a bank loan to pay for the mortgage, but also give me confidence in the stability of the housing market," said the newlywed IT worker.
The Ministry of Finance, the State Administration of Taxation and the People's Bank of China, the country's central bank, made the synchronous move on Wednesday to announce a series of new measures to boost the domestic real estate market, which had shown signs of slowing amid the global financial turmoil.
"The policy is concentrated on tax reduction and relaxing restrictions on financial institutes to give loans to private homebuyers," said Nie Meisheng, the Chamber of Real Estate of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce director.
The chamber was one of the advisors prompting the promulgation of the policy.
Nie said the policy, aimed at benefiting home buyers, rather than bailing out property developers, can woo potential purchasers' confidence.
The Ministry of Finance announced on Wednesday to exempt the stamp tax on property purchase and the value-added tax of land on property sales, starting from Nov. 1, to boost the slowing real estate sector.
The central bank announced to lower the threshold of the down payment for those making their first home purchase for self use from 30 percent to 20 percent. This would start as of Monday.
According to the financial website caijing.com.cn more measures to benefit the sector are on the table of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
The report said the housing authority was likely to give more stimulus to the trade of second-hand houses to further revitalize the property sector.
Shanghai disclosed its regional housing policy immediately after the national policy was announced. The city government made bolder encouragements in the policy adjustment, especially in the trading of second-hand houses.
"With the new policy, I could save 90,000 yuan in taxation from selling a 60-square meter flat that I bought in 2006," said Shanghai resident Zhuang Xiaowei, intently reading over Thursday's local newspaper reports on the housing policy.
He said the city had taxed second-hand house transactions heavily over the past few years, which he fully understood was "an effort to rein in the over-heated property market."
The National Bureau of Statistics reported property prices in major cities increased 3.5 percent in September from a year ago, the slowest pace in more than three years. Meanwhile, people's enthusiasm to buy tumbled to its lowest point in a decade.
The shrinking household consumption reflected a general trend of global economic slowdown, said Yi Bocheng, a professor at the Shanghai-based Fudan University.
He said the government's policy stimulation would help set free potential consumption tendency.
A recent survey of 4,807 Beijing college undergraduates suggested 57.6 percent were potential home buyers in the next five years. About half said they would choose a house of 70 to 90 square meters.
The China Youth Daily survey showed 55 percent of the future home buyers said they would apply for bank loans to pay for the mortgage. The rest admitted they would need their parents' financial support to get a home.

China’s richest man, an electronics tycoon worth more than £4 billion, has disappeared, amid reports that he is under investigation for alleged insider trading.
Huang Guangyu, 39, who turned a single street stall selling radios and watches into China’s largest electrical appliance chain, has not been heard of for several days, according to his company. Mr Huang vanished last Wednesday and the absence of information about his fate highlights the opacity of China’s justice system and the secrecy with which the police routinely conduct their investigations.
Reports slipped out at the weekend in Caijing, an unusually hard-hitting business magazine, which said that the billionaire was in trouble. By yesterday trading in shares of Mr Huang’s Gome Electrical Appliance Holdings had been halted on the Hong Kong stock exchange. The company issued a statement saying that it was making “necessary inquiries” to try to find out what had happened to its founder and controlling shareholder.
One source close to Gome – a household name in China as the cheapest and most reliable source of everything from kettles to flat-screen televisions – said that Mr Huang appeared to be incommunicado. No government department had contacted the company about his whereabouts and no notice had been received about any legal investigation into its activities.

“It’s business as usual. The CEO, Chen Xiao, is in charge and telling suppliers that everything is under control,” said the source.
Known as “the Price Butcher” for the discounts available at his stores, Mr Huang has always been vulnerable in a system in which connections count for more than business clout.
Many of China’s self-made tycoons avoid the limelight, aware that their prominence could trigger retribution from officials who are jealous of their meteoric rise to prosperity.
Caijing reported that Gome’s chairman was being questioned by police for alleged share-price manipulation linked to Shandong Jintai Group, a drug manufacturer listed in Shanghai that is believed to be controlled by his brother, Huang Junqin.
Trading in the financially troubled company was suspended in Shanghai on Monday. Caijing said that the share price of Jintai had fluctuated for most of the past two years, but it did not specify how Huang Guangyu may have been involved.
A devout Christian from the southern port city of Shantou – known in the 19th century as the British treaty port of Swatow – Mr Huang topped China’s Hurun Rich List this year with wealth estimated at $6.3 billion (£4.2 billion), from his shares in Gome and his growing property empire.
It is not the first time that Mr Huang has faced questioning. He was investigated in late 2006, along with his brother, for alleged financial irregularities involving the use of a loan to speculate in real estate. Both brothers were released and cleared of any charges in January 2007.
The mystery surrounding his latest disappearance deepened when even Xinhua, the state-owned news agency, was unable to get a comment from the police. A police official said only that the issue was being handled by the Ministry of Public Security – an indication that Mr Huang’s fate now lies with the highest decision-makers.
Gome’s business has been booming. Its results for the third quarter, released yesterday, showed that net profits soared 111 per cent in the first nine months of 2008 to 1.59 billion yuan (£155 million).
Several former rich list celebrities have run foul of the law, typically over financial misconduct. Zhou Zhengyi, the eleventh-richest person in China in 2002 and the boss of Nongkai Group, was sentenced to 16 years in jail in 2007 for bribery, embezzlement and tax fraud.
Zhang Rongkun, the sixteenth-richest in 2005 and the owner of Fuxi Investment, was sentenced to 19 years in jail in June for his role in a billion-dollar pension fund scandal in Shanghai. “People attract more attention from the public once they get listed,” said Ren Jianming, an expert on corruption issues at Tsing-hua University in Beijing. “Maybe other rich people who aren’t on the list also did business in ways that probably did not comply with the laws, but they may get less attention.”

Childhood and beginnings
Chan was born in 1954 in Victoria Peak, Hong Kong (then a British Overseas Territory), as Chan Kong Sang (meaning "born in [Hong] Kong") to Charles and Lee-Lee Chan, refugees from the Chinese Civil War. He was nicknamed Pao Pao (Chinese: 炮炮, literally meaning "Cannonball") because he was always rolling around as an infant.[3] Since his parents worked for the French Consul to Hong Kong, Chan spent his formative years within the grounds of the consul's residence in the Victoria Peak district.[4]

Chan attended the Nah-Hwa Primary School on Hong Kong Island, where he failed his first year, after which his parents withdrew him from the school. In 1960, his father emigrated to Canberra, Australia, to work as head cook for the American embassy, and Chan was sent to the China Drama Academy, a Peking Opera School run by Master Yu Jim Yuen.[4][5]

Early exploits: 1976–1980
In 1976, Jackie Chan received a telegram from Willie Chan, a film producer in the Hong Kong film industry who had been impressed with Jackie's stuntwork. Willie Chan offered him an acting role in a film directed by Lo Wei. Lo had seen Chan's performance in the John Woo film Hand of Death (1976) and planned to model him after Bruce Lee with the film New Fist of Fury.[8] His stage name was changed to Cheng Long (Chinese: 成龍, literally "become the dragon") to emphasise his similarity to Bruce Lee, whose stage name was Lei Siu Lung (Chinese: 李小龍, meaning "Little Dragon"). The film was unsuccessful because Chan was not accustomed to Lee's martial arts style. Despite the film's failure, Lo Wei continued producing films with similar themes, resulting in little improvement at the box office.[13]

Chan's first major breakthrough was the 1978 film Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, shot while he was loaned to Seasonal Film Corporation under a two-picture deal.[14] Under director Yuen Woo Ping, Chan was allowed complete freedom over his stunt work. The film established the comedic kung fu genre, and proved to be a breath of fresh air for the Hong Kong audience.[15] Chan then starred in Drunken Master, which finally propelled him to mainstream success.[16]

When Willie Chan left the company, he advised Jackie to decide for himself whether or not to stay with Lo Wei. During the shooting of Fearless Hyena Part II, Chan broke his contract and joined Golden Harvest, prompting Lo to blackmail Chan with triads, blaming Willie for his star's departure. The dispute was resolved with the help of fellow actor and director Jimmy Wang Yu, allowing Chan to stay with Golden Harvest.[17]

Success of the action comedy genre: 1980–1987
Willie Chan had become Jackie's personal manager and firm friend, and has remained so for over 30 years. He was instrumental in launching Chan's international career, beginning with his first forays into the American film industry in the 1980s. His first Hollywood film was Battle Creek Brawl in 1980. Chan then played a minor role in the 1981 film The Cannonball Run, which grossed US$100 million worldwide. Despite being largely ignored by audiences in favour of established American actors like Burt Reynolds, Chan was impressed by the outtakes shown at the closing credits, inspiring him to include the same device in his future films.

The film Police Story, nicknamed "Glass Story" for its stunt work, is set in a modern period.After the commercial failure of The Protector in 1985, Chan temporarily abandoned his attempts to break into the US market, returning his focus to Hong Kong films.[13]

Back in Hong Kong, Chan's films began to reach a larger audience in East Asia, with early successes in the lucrative Japanese market including The Young Master (1980) and Dragon Lord (1982). It was named the "Best Movie" at the 1986 Hong Kong Film Awards.[21] In 1987, Chan played "Asian Hawk", an Indiana Jones-esque character, in the film Armour of God. The film was Chan's biggest domestic box office success to date, grossing over HK $35 million.[22]

Acclaimed sequels and Hollywood breakthrough: 1988–1998

Chan in his Hollywood breakthrough film Rumble in the Bronx.In 1988 Chan starred alongside Hung and Yuen for the last time to date, in the film Dragons Forever. Hung co-directed with Corey Yuen, and the villain in the film was played by Yuen Wah, both of whom were fellow graduates of the China Drama Academy.

In the late 1980s and early 90s, Chan starred in a number of successful sequels beginning with Police Story 2, which won the award for Best Action Choreography at the 1989 Hong Kong Film Awards. This was followed by Armour of God II: Operation Condor, and Police Story 3, for which Chan won the Best Actor Award at the 1993 Golden Horse Film Festival. In 1994, Chan reprised his role as Wong Fei Hung in Drunken Master II, which was listed in Time Magazine's All-Time 100 Movies.[23] Another sequel, Police Story 4: First Strike, brought more awards and domestic box office success for Chan, but did not fare as well in foreign markets.[24] Jackie Chan rekindled his Hollywood ambitions in the 1990s, but refused early offers to play villains in Hollywood films to avoid being typecast in future roles. For example, Sylvester Stallone offered him the role of Simon Phoenix, a criminal in the futuristic film Demolition Man. Chan declined and the role was taken by Wesley Snipes.[25]

Chan finally succeeded in establishing a foothold in the North American market in 1995 with a worldwide release of Rumble in the Bronx, attaining a cult following in the United States that was rare for Hong Kong movie stars.[26] The success of Rumble in the Bronx led to a 1996 release of Police Story 3 in the United States under the title Supercop, which grossed a total of US $16,270,600. Jackie then co-starred with Chris Tucker in the 1998 buddy cop action comedy Rush Hour,[27] grossing US$130 million in the United States alone.[17]

Dramatisation: 1998–present
In 1998, Chan released his final film for Golden Harvest, Who Am I?. After leaving Golden Harvest in 1999, he produced Gorgeous, a romantic comedy that focused on personal relationships.[28] Chan then helped create a PlayStation game in 2000 called Jackie Chan Stuntmaster, to which he lent his voice and performed the motion capture.[29]

The film will star Sammo Hung and Wang Wenjie as father and son.[39] In November 2007, Chan began filming Shinjuku Incident with director Derek Yee, which sees Chan take on the role of a Chinese immigrant in Japan.[40] Filming is now complete and it is currently in post-production. The film is due for release in Hong Kong cinemas on 25 September 2008.[41] According to his blog, Chan wishes to direct a film after completing Shinjuku Incident, something he has not done for a number of years.[42] The film is expected to be the third in the Armour of God series, and has a working title of Armour of God III: Chinese Zodiac. Chan originally stated that he would start filming on 1 April 2008, but that date had passed.[43] Because the Screen Actors Guild did not go on strike, Chan started shooting his next movie The Spy Next Door at the end of October in New Mexico,[44] leaving the status of Armour of God III: Chinese Zodiac up in the air. In The Spy Next Door, Chan plays an undercover agent whose cover is blown when he looks after the children of his neighbor.

Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-Tung), the son of a peasant farmer, was born in Chaochan, China, in 1893. He became a Marxist while working as a library assistant at Peking University and served in the revolutionary army during the 1911 Chinese Revolution.

Inspired by the Russian Revolution the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was established in Shanghai by Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao in June 1921. Early members included Mao, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and Lin Biao. Following instructions from the Comintern members also joined the Kuomintang.

Over the next few years Mao, Zhu De and Zhou Enlai adapted the ideas of Lenin who had successfully achieved a revolution in Russia. They argued that in Asia it was important to concentrate on the countryside rather than the towns, in order to create a revolutionary elite.

Mao worked as a Kuomintang political organizer in Shanghai. With the help of advisers from the Soviet Union the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) gradually increased its power in China. Its leader, Sun Yat-sen died on 12th March 1925. Chiang Kai-Shek emerged as the new leader of the Kuomintang. He now carried out a purge that eliminated the communists from the organization. Those communists who survived managed to established the Jiangxi Soviet.

The nationalists now imposed a blockade and Mao Zedong decided to evacuate the area and establish a new stronghold in the north-west of China. In October 1934 Mao, Lin Biao, Zhu De, and some 100,000 men and their dependents headed west through mountainous areas.

The marchers experienced terrible hardships. The most notable passages included the crossing of the suspension bridge over a deep gorge at Luting (May, 1935), travelling over the Tahsueh Shan mountains (August, 1935) and the swampland of Sikang (September, 1935).

The marchers covered about fifty miles a day and reached Shensi on 20th October 1935. It is estimated that only around 30,000 survived the 8,000-mile Long March.

When the Japanese Army invaded the heartland of China in 1937, Chiang Kai-Shek was forced to move his capital from Nanking to Chungking. He lost control of the coastal regions and most of the major cities to Japan. In an effort to beat the Japanese he agreed to collaborate with Mao Zedong and his communist army.

During the Second World War Mao's well-organized guerrilla forces were well led by Zhu De and Lin Biao. As soon as the Japanese surrendered, Communist forces began a war against the Nationalists led by Chaing Kai-Shek. The communists gradually gained control of the country and on 1st October, 1949, Mao announced the establishment of People's Republic of China.

In 1958 Mao announced the Great Leap Forward, an attempt to increase agricultural and industrial production. This reform programme included the establishment of large agricultural communes containing as many as 75,000 people. The communes ran their own collective farms and factories. Each family received a share of the profits and also had a small private plot of land. However, three years of floods and bad harvests severely damaged levels of production. The scheme was also hurt by the decision of the Soviet Union to withdraw its large number of technical experts working in the country. In 1962 Mao's reform programme came to an end and the country resorted to a more traditional form of economic production.

As a result of the failure on the Great Leap Forward, Mao retired from the post of chairman of the People's Republic of China. His place as head of state was taken by Liu Shaoqi. Mao remained important in determining overall policy. In the early 1960s Mao became highly critical of the foreign policy of the Soviet Union. He was for example appalled by the way Nikita Khrushchev backed down over the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Mao became openly involved in politics in 1966 when with Lin Biao he initiated the Cultural Revolution. On 3rd September, 1966, Lin Biao made a speech where he urged pupils in schools and colleges to criticize those party officials who had been influenced by the ideas of Nikita Khrushchev.

Mao was concerned by those party leaders such as Liu Shaoqi, who favoured the introduction of piecework, greater wage differentials and measures that sought to undermine collective farms and factories. In an attempt to dislodge those in power who favoured the Soviet model of communism, Mao galvanized students and young workers as his Red Guards to attack revisionists in the party. Mao told them the revolution was in danger and that they must do all they could to stop the emergence of a privileged class in China. He argued this is what had happened in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin and Nikita Khrushchev.

Lin Biao compiled some of Mao's writings into the handbook, The Quotations of Chairman Mao, and arranged for a copy of what became known as the Little Red Book, to every Chinese citizen.

Zhou Enlai at first gave his support to the campaign but became concerned when fighting broke out between the Red Guards and the revisionists. In order to achieve peace at the end of 1966 he called for an end to these attacks on party officials. Mao remained in control of the Cultural Revolution and with the support of the army was able to oust the revisionists.

The Cultural Revolution came to an end when Liu Shaoqi resigned from all his posts on 13th October 1968. Lin Biao now became Mao's designated successor.

Mao now gave his support to the Gang of Four: Jiang Qing (Mao's fourth wife), Wang Hongwen, Yao Wenyuan and Zhange Chungqiao. These four radicals occupied powerful positions in the Politburo after the Tenth Party Congress of 1973.

Mao Zedong died in Beijing on 9th September, 1976.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has warned that the unfolding financial crisis should not waver the world's efforts in addressing the climate change.

He made the remarks in a high-level conference on climate change that opened in Beijing Friday. Representatives of governments, international and non-governmental organizations from nearly 100 countries are taking part in the conference that focuses on technology development and transfer.

"As the global financial crisis spreads and worsens, and the world economy slows down apparently, the international community must not waver in its determination to tackle climate change, nor must they ease in its actions," Wen said.

He urged developed nations to take responsibility and obligations in addressing climate change, including changing their unsustainable way of life.

Premier Wen also urged developed nations to help developing countries to cope with the global climate change.

He said the Chinese government has always taken a responsible attitude towards and "laid great importance" to climate change.

The event scheduled to run through Saturday is jointly organized by the Chinese government and the United Nations, in a move to facilitate international cooperation on technology development and transfer as well as the international negotiation process on climate change.

The conference will cover a wide array of topics including the current status of technology transfer and best practices, mechanism for overcoming barriers to technology transfer, roles and potential collaboration of public and private sectors, among others.

Representatives of the conference are expected to draw a proclamation on climate change issue, and the proclamation will serve as a reference to the upcoming Parties Conference of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that is due to kick of in Poland next month.

Zhang Ping, the minister of National Development and Reform Commission, the country's economic regulator, called on developed countries to carry out obligations and duties under the UNFCCC, to provide developing countries with financial support.

UN Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon said earlier: "It is proper to hold the conference in Beijing, because China is making efforts to research and develop renewable resources, energy-saving and other technologies to cope with climate change and seek a sustainable development."

Chinese government has set a target of reducing energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent and major pollutant emissions by 10 percent from the 2005 levels by 2010 to protect environment, save energy and ensure a sustainable development.

The Macau Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo will take the shape of a jade rabbit lantern and it will change colors to present a mythological world, Macau officials announced Thursday at the opening of an expo promotional week in the special administrative region.
The design was inspired by rabbit lanterns popular during the Mid-autumn Festival in south China in ancient times, officials said. In Chinese mythology, the jade rabbit is a guide at the front of Nantianmen, the door leading to a fairy land.
The pavilion will be wrapped with a double-layer glass membrane and feature fluorescent screens on its outer walls. Balloons will serve as the head and tail of the "rabbit" and these can be moved up and down to attract visitors.
A spiral ramp will take visitors on a journey of Macau. A film about Macau will be screened on the roof of the pavilion.
Every visitor to the pavilion will receive a rabbit lantern.
The pavilion will be eco-friendly with recyclable construction materials as well as solar power panels and rain collection systems.

Expatriate children living in Shanghai want to make more friends in the city, according to a survey conducted by Jinchen Green Property Service Organization, a local real estate agent.
The survey asked 120 children, from more than 10 countries and regions, who live in the international communities of Lujiazui, Green City, Lianyang and Oriental Compound. Of the surveyed kids, 33 percent said they had almost no friends and 44 percent said they only had a few. The children hoped more opportunities would be offered to help them make friends.
Expatriate children are most satisfied with their life in the city's international schools, according to the survey. They said the schools arranged many courses and activities. When they had difficulties in their studies and relationships, most were happy to seek help from teachers.

While they were satisfied with the city's environment, shopping and entertainment facilities, they didn't speak highly of the city's traffic and public sanitation.
"It is quite convenient to live in Shanghai," said Linda, 15, from the United States. "There's a good variety of stuff to buy and it is a cheap place to live. But sometimes people spit in the street and the driving is dangerous, and the public toilets aren't clean." Linda said she hoped something would be done to solve the traffic congestion downtown.
"Locals are open-minded and friendly," said the teenager, who has lived in Shanghai for three years. "Life here is quite interesting and I have got used to living here. I've begun enjoying it. But one thing I don't agree with is that some people think foreigners are rich. I need to say, in fact, we are making a contribution to this city."
The respondents were generally satisfied with community greenery and security, real estate quality and property services.
"I chose to rent a villa in the Jinjue Villa community," said a French woman whose family has been here for eight years. "From here to my sons' school or going shopping, it only takes 20 minutes' drive. Living here, we can enjoy a quiet environment, good greenery and a spacious and bright house. Overall, it's our ideal home."

And overseas schools, determined to cash in on the frenzy, are making a beeline for the many education exhibitions in the city.At least 20 schools, universities and art colleges from the United States participated in an exhibition held at Beijing Multimedia Life Square in Changning District over the weekend.Last week, two prestigious institutions from Australia ?? the University of Sydney and University of Melbourne ?? made special trips to Beijing to pitch their courses. Chinese government tightens regulatory on foreign property investors

Chinese government is tightening its grip once more on foreign investors in Chinese real estate market, banning them from borrowing offshore in the latest effort to tame property prices and cool the economy.
The new rule, set out in a circular from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange , could squeeze foreign investors who take advantage of lower interest rates outside China.
Some may find it especially difficult to fund projects as Beijing has told its banks to cut back on loans for the construction industry. The central bank ordered Chinese banks to stop lending for land purchases as far back as 2003.
"The only alternative is to fund the entire equity," said Andrew McGinty, a partner at the law firm Lovells in Shanghai.
"But that's not a very favoured method, because your internal return on investment goes down dramatically."
Property funds operating in China tend to borrow to fund at least 50 percent of a project's value.
The circular, which the currency regulator sent to its local branches in early July but has not yet published on its Web site, also increases red-tape for foreign property investors.
Investors seeking to bring capital into China to set up a real estate company must now lodge documents with the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing -- not just with local branches of the ministry, according to the new circular with de facto effect from June 1.
That process could take a month or more, said an official at the Ministry of Commerce, declining to be identified.
"What we mean is very clear: First we are targeting foreign real estate firms that are illegally approved by local governments," a SAFE official said.
McGinty said the new rule would reduce foreign investment in the real estate sector, but the real impact would depend on how it is enforced.
UNCERTAIN IMPACT
China has applied a raft of measures to rein in property investment, including interest rate rises and rules to discourage construction of luxury homes.
Some steps have specifically targeted foreign investors, who account for less than 5 percent of total investment in the property sector. Foreign investors must now secure land purchases before setting up joint ventures or wholly owned foreign enterprises in China.
However, funds such as those run by ING Real Estate, Morgan Stanley , Hong Kong's Sun Hung Kai Properties , Henderson Land Development and Singapore's CapitaLand Ltd. are pouring more money than ever into China to tap a middle class hunger for new homes and rising capital values.
China's urban property inflation rose to 7.1 percent in June, compared with a year earlier, from 6.4 percent in May.
McGinty said some foreign investors may eventually quit China for more interesting markets if an inability to employ leverage reduces their internal rate of return.
However, others said they would stay on.
"We are not too worried about it. Cooling measures won't stay forever," said Robert Lie, Asia chief executive for ING Real Estate, which has raised a $350 million fund to build housing in China.
ING Real Estate borrows locally, partly to hedge its currency risk. Most other foreign investors in China do the same. Some foreign property firms that have been in China for many years have strong connections with local lenders -- Chinese banks as well as international banks incorporated in China.
"There is still strong interest in China, although there will be some form of slowdown in the number of transactions," said Grey Hyland, head of investment at Jones Lang LaSalle in Shanghai.
He said the new approval rules would further dampen the ability of foreigners to compete with local rivals.
"It's still early to say how, because these rules are still very new and being tested," Hyland said.
One consequence, he added, could be to drive foreign property investors inland to second- and third-tier cities that the authorities are eager to develop and where approval is therefore easier to obtain.

Chinese self-made regional airplane launched for domestic commercial flight ysterday

The Chinese-made regional airplanet, Modem Ark (MA) 60 was launched for the maiden domestic commercial flight in the northern port city of Tianjin on Sunday.
Carried by Okair Airlines, the flight marked the start of the domestic commercial operation of MA 60, said Xu Chaoquan, senior official with the General Administration of Aviation. It also marks the breaking of the foreign-made airplane's monopoly in China.
Produced by the Xi'an Aircraft Industry Company (XAC), a major Chinese aircraft producer, MA 60 is designed for short and medium-range commuter services. China owns the independent Intellectual Property Rights.
Due to its low operational and maintenance costs, MA 60 has been sold quite well in Africa and south east Asia since 2005.
To meet the rising domestic demand for regional jets, the Beijing-based Okair Airlines and the Kunming-based Ying An Airlines gave XAC orders for 10 and 60 MA 60 planes respectively last year.
So far XAC has received orders and intention contracts for 136 MA 60 planes from the clients at home and abroad.
China is expected to need 800 regional jets in the following 20years. XAC said it would enhance the MA 60 output while promoting MA 600 in the market and accelerating the development of MA 700 so as to foster the regional airplane brand of MA series.
China still has a long way to go on this field.

Microsoft Corp will crack down on used pirated software products in China , the world's No. 1 software vendor said yesterday.
Microsoft will also launch an aggressive price campaign in China, promoting Office suite for the world's lowest price, to cash in on the world's No. 2 personal computer market, industry insiders said.
The Microsoft move follows a lawsuit it brought against a Website providing Windows downloads. Microsoft sued a Website called "Tomato Garden" which provided users free downloads of unlocked Windows systems and other software. Police have arrested the Website's chief.
Microsoft said yesterday that computers with Windows and Office that failed to be validated online would turn to a black screen every 60 minutes and warnings would flash from Monday.
Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) would help users detect copycat operating systems, it said. After that, users would see their screens go black every 60 minutes and a warning flash across the screen.
OGA, to be used for the first time in China, would detect the Office suites, according to Microsoft.
In China, more than 90 percent of computers are installed with Windows and Office products.
Microsoft have also slashed the price of authorized Windows and Office products. A family and student version of Windows Vista now starts at 499 yuan (US$73). Office prices have been lowered to 199 yuan.
However, on the street, Windows Vista copies sell for less than 7 yuan."

GDP grows 9.9% in first three quarters

China's economy grew 9.9 percent year on year in the first three quarters of this year, according to official figures released on Monday, showing a trend of slowdown amid the current global financial crisis.
The growth rate was 2.3 percentage points lower than the same period of last year, or 0.5 percentage points lower than the first quarter of this year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Monday.
In the third quarter, the growth rate slowed down to 9%, the lowest in five years.
The consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, rose 4.6 percent in September over the same period last year.
Fixed assets investment, one of the three major propellers of the Chinese economy, totaled 11.6246 trillion yuan ($1.66 trillion) in the first three quarters, up 27.0 percent over the same period last year, according to the bureau.
The growth rate was 0.7 percentage points higher than the first half of this year, or 1.3 percentage points higher than the year-earlier level.The State Council said on Sunday China's economy can weather the effects of the global financial turmoil, but growth will decline as the expansion of business profits and public revenues slows.
In a statement at the end of an executive meeting led by Premier Wen Jiabao, it said the turmoil and economic instability will have a "gradual" effect on the country.
It said China's economic growth will slow along with corporate profits and public revenues, and as capital markets continue to fluctuate.
"Unfavorable international factors and the serious natural disasters at home have not changed the basic growth situation of our country's economy," said the statement posted on a government Web site. "Our country's economic growth has the ability and vigor to resist risks."
China must "adopt flexible and cautious macroeconomic policies" to maintain stable growth, the statement said.
The council said that in the fourth quarter, China should focus on developing the rural economy, while striving to control inflation.
The government should also help local small and medium enterprises to grow by encouraging financial institutions to provide more loans to them, the statement said.
